On Multiphase Pump Seals: Leakage and Gas Injection to Control Seal Centering Stiffness

The presentation shows measurements of leakage and dynamic force coefficients for four annular pressure seals supplied with an air in oil mixture, from pure liquid to just air. The experimental results demonstrate a decrease in damping and a rise in centering stiffness as the gas content increases. Next, single point gas injection serves to change the seal dynamic stiffness (K>0), produce stiffness asymmetry and promote system static stability, most desirable for the operation of vertical hydraulic turbines and submersible pumps.
